Contrast

This is ironic, but it really happens in some part of China.

Q & A

-For some odd reason I feel like updating my blog. My last entry was 13th of May, it was like 1 month ago, so bare in mind that this post is going to be long =). Anyway, it's just some random updates and mostly about my college, so i doubt a not-toa student will have an interest for reading this.

-Second year second semester is a money-burning-semester. Lets just sum up the amount that I spent currently. College fees 6000 + Graphic tablet Bamboo 280 (it's the cheapest you can get for tablet) + acrylic, canvas and all the relative materials 500 +dslr 3500 (optional, not really recommend for IL student because I heard that the subject is a short term subject so don't buy it just for assignment purpose, and you would not score higher by getting it. However, you tends to get a better understanding of photography by using a dslr.)= 10k+. This is definitely a big numbers for an expenditure that were spent within 2 months, I feel very sorry for my parent to squeeze out such a big amount =(. Therefore, art is an expensive subject to learn, especially in our college. Sigh

-Our subjects get interesting for this semester. We have

Illustration 1: Acrylic on canvas. This is the time when you can see illus student pm and facebook are flooded with ranting about pavarroti and nissan. Our class is a bit unlucky because due to our numbers of student, we couldn't get enough amount of acrylic paint for each of us, means we have to share, and acrylic is one medium that dries extremely fast. Besides that, we didn't get the right canvas also, and there are no stock for the brushes that we require to use. =( This is a subject that requires a particular style- American Realism. That's how we saw similar style of illustration student artwork during graduation. I'm still wondering the reason for our syllabus to limit students for a particular style. =/

Marker visual: When we say marker, it more like a "style" rather then a medium. Yea, we do not use marker for this subject but graphic tablet. Just that the execution and strokes are markers alike, at least that's the requirement for our major. Another subject that doesn't shows any personality at all, but rather the outcome.

Cartoon character design: When a lecturer told you that there is totally freedom and no limitation, that's a lie, at least it happened in our case =/. We are sort of limit in a so-called "cartoon" style. Try to google cartoon and you get the picture.

S.E.A. culture: I found this subject interesting, not like what my seniors described as "dull and pointless". This is one subject besides "culture and society of Malaysia" that actually helps building an identity in our work, at least we this subject is very informative. Toa students especially my major tends to get stereotyped as duplicators instead of artist because most of our work exhibited looks stupid (stupid here defines as no further thinking, but straight-forward-to-the-point-artwork). We felt shameful when our lecturer asked us whether anyone knows about WongHoyCheong, but apparently none of us heard about it. We tends to know more about Drew Struzan or David Grove rather then this local artist. This is kind of pathetic.

Light and Mood: Just like how the subject named, the whole thing are about Light and Mood. We are required to capture the mood and lighting of a particular artwork in 3 minutes and execute it without any references. This is one of the subject that I am very uncertain when doing it, plus I'm very unfamiliar with digital medium.

Photography: Basically just an introduction to digital photography when we learns about all the aperture and shutter speed thing, never even touch about the concept behind it. So we're just like touching the surface of the whole photography term.

-These are the 6 subjects for this semester. Time consuming part increased, but brain storming part decreased because we do not have any design related subject this time.

-I finally have eye bag after 3 days without sleeping (Sleep less then 2 hours defines as nap instead of sleep for toa student), yeah I know it's kind of late for toa student only to have eye bags now, but I'm one kind of species that hard to get eye bags.

-Stereotype happens when we judge things just by impression without further understanding, so this happens in our college too. Today, BT came and have some critique and shows some of the AD students marker rendering work during our L&M class. The motive supposed to be encouraging but somehow the feedback of some of my classmate seems to be different especially after we saw AD student's marker work. Excuses, rants, assumption and all for the particular subjects merged in the conversation after class dismissed. Funny but ironic. It seems like our ego was being grabbed by other major. All this happens due to stereotyping. Nobody likes to get stereotyped or branded but we always did this to others, aren't we. Let's see what people stereotyped about Illustration major =)

1)IL student are just duplication of Tatsun and Kinsun
2)IL student are all otakus and manga lover
3)IL student English sucks! Just judge by the proficient in English of IL dept lecturer and tutor is more then enough.
4)IL student are arrogant. They thought they are great just because they thought they have great skills in drawing and they spent the most time in their work.

Yeah, I know all this stereotypes are provoking and insulting, especially to illustration students, but it really happens, and we hate people to stereotype us because they don't understand. But why the hell are we illustration student were also stereotyping other majors as well? Giving statement without any further understanding. Thus, to clarify the stereotype above, I have to say these:

1) Instead of saying Tatsun and Kinsun, it's more like Drew Struzan and David Grove. We are not copy machine. Styles are the same due to the assignment requirement, so when it goes down to personal work, it is a totally different case. Toa are just helping us to build up a portfolio which is convincing and commercialize, but not much in developing personal identity.

2) No. Manga lovers appear anywhere, not only our major. The reason why the majority likes manga is because manga (Chinese pirated version, RM4.50 that kind) was easy to get and almost 99% of comic bookstore in Malaysia sells Manga only. We can even read manga online for free, while western comic hardly translate to Chinese, so that's the main influence why there are so many manga lovers around.

3) I will say yes in general but no in specific. Yeah, I'm a illustration student and I agreed that my English is not up to par, and try to browse through the dialog written in the comic or the explaination for a piece of concept art done by illustration student, you will get the picture. However, this is not a illustration major issue, it's more like the education and syllabus. Firstly, illustration major do not really have presentation, means we don't really train public speaking. Second, our works more into personal execute rather then group work, means less social and team work. Thirdly which is more like my personal opinion, is about the culture. Illustration major is one kind of "work-hard-ONLY-subject", Kinsun and Tatsun is one of the best example, so when we say work-hard-ONLY, it can somehow relate to Chinese/Eastern culture. In general, students who speak Chinese tends to apply more in Chinese culture rather then western. So this is one of the reason why students from our major in general could not speak English well. I know it's bullshit but it's just in GENERAL and personal opinion, not specific. =)

4) Big misunderstanding, but it's true that some of us have a misconception that we think we spent a lot of time in our assignment then other major like Advertising design. I have to say that none of the major are free, each of us have our own field to busy with, so that's no point to compare each and other, just like our reaction after BT shows us other major work. It's like comparing apple and oranges. Yeah, our assignment seems like very time consuming but to be honest, it requires less brain cell then others, more like experiences and skills. Some of the major seems like less work but more brain storming and research. Both are totally different subjects.

- I was sort of bothered by the whole "attention seeking" thing for the past few days. Are we all attention seekers, especially for teenage like our age? Apparently I think the answer is yes. In a very amateur way of speaking, our life purpose is about seeking attention. The reason we dress up, the reason we act, the reason for doing this and that, the reason we blog (like what I'm doing now), etc. Sometimes, when one was saying that he/she do not like attention, but remain silence and insignificance were also an action to seek for attention, is like longing for people to concern. So, in a way, everything or anything can be see as an act of seeking attention. It is ironic and funny when you see someone writing a pm like "I don't feel like talking." in his/her msn or facebook. When you don't want to talk why are you signing in and telling everyone? Yeah, we are animals who needs social so badly, but sometimes when the whole attention seeking action was overdid, it became irritating.

-Doing things with purpose. Is there any action that we did without any purpose? I doubt. When we say charity work, why are people doing charity work. If the one who was being helped doesn't shows any appreaciation, doesn't seems to be please for being helped, will the one who was doing the charity still willing to do it? When we do things, we tends to seek for reward, rewards here can be something abstract, like the feeling good for helping people. (Yeah, I believe there is one kind of species of homo sapien that is born to have a hobby of helping people) So they give help because they like to do so, and feel good to do so. Will anyone do something (which brings zero benefit to ANYONE) that they totally dislike (I mean when the condition is all about volunteer)? Again, I doubt. This is a more like a question to be discuss.

- How many of you actually knows that the song "Twinkle twinkle little stars" shares the same melody with the child rhyme " A-B-C-D-E-F-G...". At least I'm stupid enough to realise this fact quite recently...

-Our class (more like our group) forms a group named IL81WSG (wsg here defines as weekly sketch group), which we suggest a random topic every 2 weeks and everyone execute their own interpretation and post it in da while giving comments to each other. Quite interesting, but we always delay it due to the huge workload of other assignment =/. Even our lecturer leetheng was part of the member as well :D

-I'm suffering some pain on both my legs for the past 2 weeks with some odd reason. Even my dad which is a Chinese Physician specialize in bones and fractures can't diagnose it out. He said I shall go take a x-ray of my leg one day =(

-Digital painting is one of the fastest way to see improvement just by self-taught.

-Facebook now looks more like Quizbook. 8 out of 10 new posts are about quiz...

-Ming Tien get grade A for restaurant rating, this is seriously wtf. If this make sense, I think no other restaurant or food court can get lower then that grade. By the way, if you notice, only Raspberry, Face to face, and Ming Tien was get "quarantine" by Pejabat Kesihatan, but all those mamak are free from it, but i doubt those mamak is clean enough. =/

-One Tree Hill has awesome OST :D

- I actually spent 2 hours+ on blogging this, wtf. I shall start my assignment or I'm doomed. Sigh.
